A History That Spans Centuries
Across Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines and the wider Asian continent, people have been weaving rattan and natural materials for centuries. Skills passed from one generation to the next.
It was in the mid twentieth century that these forms began appearing in European homes — in Italy, Sweden, Spain and France, natural cane and wicker found their way into the interiors of people who understood that beauty did not need to be complicated.
By the 1970s, woven pendant shades had found their way into sunrooms and dining rooms across Britain and the Continent. There was a longing for authenticity, for texture, for something warm and handmade in homes that were increasingly full of plastic and chrome. People wanted to bring the outside in. They reached for rattan. They reach for it still.
Then came the flat-pack era. Postwar manufacturing brought new materials, new possibilities, new excitement. Chrome, industrial steel, synthetics — there was so much that was new that the old and enduring simply got swept aside for a while.
